Bangkok’s newest Novotel throws open its rooftop bar

THE NEW kid on Bangkok’s rooftop bar block, Sky on 20 is quickly becoming a hip hangout for the young professional set to enjoy interesting, tailor-made cocktails and tempting tapas while watching the sun go down over the city.
Perched on the top of the recently opened Novotel Sukhumvit 20, this is the first rooftop bar of the five-star AccorHotel Novotel chain in Southeast Asia and aims to offer visitors a new nightlife experience. Oozing a relaxed ambience, the bar is modern and smart, furnished |with giant sofas, tables and stools in different sizes and a colourful counter bar boasting an exclusive selection of Hennessy & Belvedere cocktails.

“The Sky on 20 just opened three weeks ago. We’ve moved away from the formal rooftop bar concept to a more easy-going, casual venue where customers can relax over a drink and some food,” says Food & Beverage manager Dan Jamme.
“We also want to change the thinking that rooftop means expensive drinks and expensive food. Here, we charge a net Bt150 for beer and Bt250 for cocktails. We’re close to Sukhumvit Road and an easy walk to the Skytrain.”

Executive chef Janne Olikainnen from Finland is responsible for the mouth-watering tapas and finger foods, all of which are ideal for sharing. Everything is made on the premises using the very best ingredients and the pizza is freshly baked not reheated.
“We really want to play with fun. We’re only making simple dishes with an emphasis on tapas,” Olikainnen says.

Ginger Mojito

Bramble

We decide to sample four different cocktails. Ginger Mojito (Bt250), is a tasty blend of fresh mint, lime, fresh ginger juice, caster sugar and Pampero Blanco topped with ginger beer while the smooth Bramble (also Bt250) combines Gordon’s Dry Gin, sugar and fresh lemon juice with a float of blackberry liquor. Apple and Vanilla Margarita (Bt300) is sour and sweet, thanks to the Tres Magueyes Plata and sour apple liquor, which are balanced with home-made vanilla sugar, fresh lemon juice and apple puree.

June Bug

A popular order with the ladies, June Bug (Bt250) is a mixture of coconut liqueur, melon and banana, served with pineapple and lemon juice for a fruity flavour. All four taste great with Mozzarella-Parma Ham Bruschetta (Bt230) made from goat cheese and tomato salsa and Crab Mayonnaise Bruschetta (Bt310) in which the crab meat is blended with an aioli of mayonnaise and garlic.
