Foreign travellers keen on Chin, Shan states

FOREIGN VISITORS are keen on going to Chin and Shan states rather than other regions such as Bagan, Taunggyi, Inle and Mandalay, which were previously the more popular tourist destinations in Myanmar, says Phyo Wai Yazar of All Asia Exclusive Travel @ Tour Co.

The number of tourist arrivals in hilly and coastal regions has increased this month, according to tour agencies.
“Foreign travellers are now interested in going to Chin and Shan states with the aim of enjoying natural scenery. We have received tour programmes for visits into the hilly regions,” Phyo Wai Yazar said.
A tour guide said: “Foreigners can go to the Mandalay, Bagan, Magway and Pyi regions on a cruise liner. More foreigners are coming to Myanmar on cruise ships from the US and Britain.
“Only foreign travellers are taking cruises down the rivers. But with the hill- tour programmes, they go to Shan, Rakhine and Chin states to enjoy natural scenery and to observe the lifestyles and customs of national races. However, there is no tour programme yet for going to the snow-capped mountains because of bad weather.”
In Chin state, Natmataung National Park and Bontalar Waterfall are now attracting foreign visitors. Moreover, Chin state has other tourist destinations – places such as the 3,200-metre Khonumtung (Mount Victoria), the highest peak in the state, and Reh Lake, a heart-shaped lake in Teddim region.
