Let's produce more competent doubles players: Thessana

National badminton coach Thessana Phanvissawat said producing many talented doubles players is the answer to tackling the Chinese juggernaut as his proteges Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanach lost to Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong of China for the fifth time in the Asian Badminton Championships on Sunday.

The Thai mixed doubles duo have put in an impressive performance this year but failed to beat the world No 2 Lu and Huang, who also dashed their dreams of winning their first Super Series title in the Singapore Open two weeks ago.

“There is not much difference between our players and the Chinese. We tried to find a way to tackle them but they came quite well prepared for us,” said Thessana, a former national doubles player.

“Since we play them several times a year, they begin to read our game and are getting used to our style,” he said. Dechapol and Sapsiree took the Chinese opponents to three games in Singapore but lost in two easy games in Wuhan.

“We should produce more stars to become pebbles in the shoes of other teams. We have only one good mixed doubles team that has to deal with several good pairs,” he said.

Dechapol said: “The Chinese are powerful, fast and very consistent. They have the game. But we will try to figure out and beat them one day.”

Dechapol and Sapsiree will take almost a month’s break before representing Thailand in the Sudirman Cup, which starts on May 21 in Australia.
