Mananchaya ousts Punnin in teenage showdown
Mananchaya Sawangkaew won the battle of teenagers against Punnin Kovapitukted 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 to move into the second round of the US$15,000 Cal-Comp & XYZ Printing ITF Pro Circuit W2 at the True Arena Hua Hin yesterday.
The 15-year-old was the more consistent player at crucial stage as she beat the younger opponent, 14, to pose her first match win on an ITF maindraw.
Waiting for her in round two is the winner between top seed Harriet Dart of Great Britain or Wushuang Zheng of China on Wednesday.
In the other first round matches, Indian’s Karman Kaur Thandi, the last week’s quarter-finalist, beat Japanese Haruka Kaji 6-1 6-3.
Two seeds were eliminated on Monday. One was third seed Ying Zhang who fell to countrywoman Shanshan Guo 6-7 (4-7) 2-6. The other was eighth seed Estelle Cascino of France who was upset by Chihiro Muramatsu of Japan 1-6 6-7 (5-7).
