Qualifier Tamachan moves on in Hua Hin

Tamachan Momkoonthod won the battle of qualifiers against Chinese Yukun Zhang 3-6 6-3 6-2 to continue her impressive run in the US$15,000 Cal-Comp & XYZ Printing ITF Pro Circuit W2 at the True Arena Hua Hin on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old rising star who reached the quarter-finals last week as a qualifier sets up a date with Sara Tomic, the younger sister of Australian top layer Bernard, in round two. Tomic upset Bunyawi Thamchaiwat of Thailand 6-3 6-4

Veteran Nudnida Luangnam, another qualifier, outlast in the long tussles against Chinese Zhanlan Wei 7-6 (9-7) 2-6 6-4 in the first round battle that last up to three hours and 46 minutes.

The other winning Thai was Patcharin Cheapchandej, last week’s winner, who beat Japanese Mizuno Kijima 7-6 (7-1) 6-3.

Top seed Harriet Dart of England beat Wushuang Zheng of China 6-2 7-5 while fourth seed Fatma Al Nabhani of Oman beat Michika Ozeki of Japan 6-4 7-5.

Australian Michaela Haet upset sixth seed  Margarita Lazareva of Russia 6-2 6-4 but the biggest upset was the departure of second seed Chanel Simmonds of South Africa who was knocked out by Giuliana Olmos of Mexico 4-6 4-6.
