Asian execs regain
confidence in economy
Business leaders in Asia have adopted a more cautious outlook than their counterparts in the United States but remain more optimistic than chief executives in the European Union (EU).
The YPO Global Pulse Confidence Index released yesterday gives Asia a world-beating composite score of 62.5 after having fallen behind in the fourth quarter of 2016. YPO (Young Presidents Organisation) is a Hong Hong-based outfit focused on executive leadership.
While the overall regional picture was significantly improved, YPO reported, there were marked differences in sentiment across the major economies in Asia.
India reported a more positive outlook, gaining 3.2 points to 66, reversing the dip it experienced in the final quarter of 2016. India remains the most confident among the world’s top 10 economies.
Sentiment among business leaders in China remained relatively flat, edging up 0.3 point to 61.6. However, Japan reported a more subdued outlook, slipping 2.6 points to 55.7, following a decrease in consumer spending in the first three months of the year. |– The Nation

Petronas Coral 2.0
results in cost savings
Petroliam Nasional’s industry-wide programme, Cost Reduction Alliance 2.0 (Coral 2.0), has resulted in cost savings of some 5 billion ringgit (Bt40 billion) since its inception in 2015, the Malaysian energy giant says.
President and group chief executive officer Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin said Petronas had no intention of expanding Coral 2.0, which is limited to the upstream portion of its business to downstream.
“We’ve been focusing a lot on the upstream business because this involves a lot of collaboration with our production-sharing contract partners. ” he told a press conference at the 19th Asia Oil and Gas Conference in Kuala Lumpur. |– The StarIndonesia to control garlic imports after price increase

Indonesian Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita has said he will issue a decree to regulate garlic imports and distribution to prevent price fluctuations of the commodity, after a sharp prices increase.
He said he did not know the cause of the price increase from around 30,000 rupiah (Bt78) per kilogram to above 50,000 rupiah, but he estimated that it was because of an absence of government control.
“There is no government regulation on garlic imports. Without government intervention, the price could rise any time,” Enggartiasto said on Monday after attending a meeting with garlic importers.
He said members of the Indonesian Garlic Entrepreneurs Association expressed commitment to cooperating with the government.
He promised to issue a ministerial regulation on garlic imports within two days so that imported garlic could immediately be distributed to markets.
According to Information Centre for Strategic Food Prices (PIHPS) data, the price of garlic in Jakarta is 68,750 rupiah per kilogram, in Yogyakarta 63,500 rupiah and in West Papua 58,750 rupiah.
Enggartiasto said garlic importers and distributors were required to report the amount of their garlic stock to the ministry.
“We will seal warehouses and confiscate hoarded garlic and destroy it,” he warned. – The Jakarta Post
