Peangtarn’s Wimbledon dream comes true

Peangtarn Plipuech’s dream of entering a Grand Slam event came true yesterday when she won the US$25,000 ITF Women’s Circuit title in Goyang, South Korea, yesterday, to make the cut for the Wimbledon Qualifying round.

The 24-year-old Thai beat Japan’s Mari Osaka 7-6 (9-7) 6-0 in the final for her third US$25,000 ITF title that will catapult her into the top-200 in world rankings. Only the top-200 are eligible for the major which is played on grass.

“I’m so happy and relieved. I really wanted to play my first Grand Slam event and that inspired me to work hard and play well this week,” said Peangtarn, who was No 232 in the world before the win.
Peangtarn has been on a winning run for the past two weeks, taking the US$25,000 ITF title in Hua Hin a fortnight ago. She will play two more ITF tournaments in Japan before making the trip to London with her doubles partner Nicha Lertpitaksinchai with whom she teamed up to win the doubles title on Saturday.
She said she would not be making any special preparations for grass, a surface she has not played on for many years.
“I tried to play on grass once but it didn’t suit my game. I hope my good form and the experience I gained over the years will carry me through. I hope to have some good results.”
Asked if expects a possible match-up with former champion Maria Sharapova, who will also take the qualification route, she said: “Hopefully I won’t have to play her.”
