Big screen delights

Big screen delights

There’s plenty in store for cinephiles this weekend as the River City Bangkok Film Club offers two screenings along special activities and a talk.

The British film “Trishna” screens today (June 10) at 4pm. Directed by Michael Winterbottom and based on the classic novel “Tess of the Durbervilles” by Thomas Hardy, the film is set in Rajasthan, India, and tells the story of the tragic relationship between Jay Singh (Roshan Seth), the scion of a rich British-Indian family who runs a family-owned hotel in Rajasthan and the beautiful and gentle Trishna (Frieda Pinto), a hotel employee who comes from a poor rural family.

Nonzee Nimibutr’s erotic drama “Jan Dara” screens tomorrow, also at 4, and will be followed by a Q&A session with the director Nonzee and the cast – Suvinit Panjamawat (young Jan), actress Vipavee Charoenpura (Aunt Waad) and May Patarawarim Timkul (Khun Kaew).

Released in 2001, “Jan Dara” tells the story of Jan who grows up in a dysfunctional family, headed by his father who uses women, from maids to mistresses, purely for his physical pleasure. Jan is himself initiated into the physical games pretty early by the various women in his grand house, and soon becomes both a pawn, and a clone of his father.

Thai snacks and Thai wine from the Village Farm Winery will be served after the screening.

The Club meets in Room 232 on the second floor or River City.
