Thailand preparing info for EU on illegal fishing

Thailand is preparing information and statistics regarding its efforts to suppress illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing ahead of a visit by European Union officials from July 1 to 16.

The country could become a model for tackling IUU in Asean if it succeeds in being removed from the yellow-card status imposed by the EU.
“Previously, Thailand had made progress in solving IUU problems as suggested by the EU. It will conduct a more thorough inspection this time, especially in ascertaining the actual number of existing vessels,” said Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Chatchai Sarikulya.
The EU officials will follow up on Thailand’s efforts to eradicate IUU in the operations of port-in-port-out control centres, control measures for vessel monitoring systems and other systems for communications, vessel routes and labour.
