Varatchaya and Soylu prevail at Wimbledon

Fourth-seeded Varatchaya Wongteanchai and Ipek Soylu of Turkey came back from the first set defeat to oust Czech Denisa Allertova and Slovak Kristina Kucova 1-6 6-0 6-1 in the Wimbledon qualifying first round on Wednesday.

Pairing up together for the first time, the Thai-Bulgarian took it awhile to tune their game together but once they found their momentum they never looked back, winning their match in 68 minutes.

“As we never played together before, we had to adjust to each other. Also, it was a bit cold out there, which is why it was a bit difficult for us at the beginning,” said the Thai doubles specialist.

Varatchaya is one of the two Thais taking part at this year’s Wimbledon. The other is Luksika Kumkhum who beat Bulgaria’s Victoriya Tomoya 6-0 6-3 in the women’s singles qualifying first round earlier.

Varatchaya and Soylu will play the final qualifying round on Friday against the winning team between American Kristie Ahn and Madison Brengle and Lesley Kerkhove of the Netherlands and Lidziya Marozova of Belarus.
