Visions on the clarinet

Visions on the clarinet

Calogero Palermo, the principal clarinettist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, will join the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra for the concert, “Visions”, at Prince Mahidol Hall on August 18 at 7pm and August 19 at 4pm.

The recital is part of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra 2017 series.
After completing his studies in Sicily and with Thomas Friedli in Geneva, Palermo was appointed principal clarinettist – at the age of 22 – of the Orchestra del Teatro V Bellini in the Sicilian city of Catania.
He won the Orchestra del Teatro dell’Opera di Roma principal clarinet audition in 1997, and served as principal clarinettist of that orchestra from 1997 to 2008 and from 2012 to 2015. During the intervening years, he was a member of the Orchestre National de France. Palermo has worked as a substitute with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala in Milan and with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
A regular soloist on radio and television broadcasts, he is also an experienced teacher who regularly gives masterclasses. He is the author of the didactic method Soli d’orchestra, containing revisions and arrangements for clarinet and piano of well-known works.
The concert’s theme it is derived from “The Noblest Vision” or “Nobilissima Visione”, a 50-minute ballet in six scenes by Paul Hindemith and originally choreographed by L?onide Massine for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. The libretto by Hindemith and Massine depicts episodes from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. The work was completed in February 1938 and premiered at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London that same year, with sets and costumes by Pavel Tchelitchew and under the baton of the composer.
After the ballet premiere, Hindemith extracted a 20-minute orchestral suite (retaining the Nobilissima visione name) in three movements, using five of the original 11 movements: Introduction and Rondo, March and Pastorale, and Passacaglia. The suite was first performed at Teatro La Fenice in Venice and has become a regularly programmed orchestral work.
The concert programme also features Aharon Harlap’s “Clarinet Concerto”, Claude Debussy’s “La Mer” and Thai traditional music. Alfonso Scarano conducts.
Tickets are Bt500 and Bt300 at Thai Ticket Major counters and www.ThaiTicketMajor.com.
