Condemning the right to protest is so ignorant

Condemning the right to protest is so ignorant

Re: “US ‘anti-racism’ protests are attacking foundation of racial equality”, Have Your Say,  October 3.

On Tuesday this column was again disgraced by a contributor who makes it his business to offend as many sane people as possible. This time he attacked (primarily) black people exercising their right to peaceful protest by taking the knee during the US national anthem. Not something any American would do lightly, but which manifestly shows the depth of their quite justified anger and legitimate grievances.
This ignorant diatribe is prefaced by the following observation: “They are attacking the very piece of legislation that affords them their liberty, lifestyle and their freedom of expression. To insult the country that has fought for its freedom at the cost of millions of lives, the freedom they now enjoy, is not heroic. It is dumb and ignorant.”
Au contraire; unlike the writer in question, it shows bravery he would neither understand nor practise himself.
This stupidity is compounded by the following: “They [the protesters] are ‘clearly intent on causing racial division’ and devaluing all that the constitution stands for ... They also should realise that had history been different they could still be in Africa living a very different lifestyle.”
One can only presume that these people have slavery to thank for their good fortune. Singling out African Americans for such gratuitous criticism implies formulaic racially intolerant undertones by the contributor, rather than the athletes themselves.
According to the same correspondent, the protesters “need to wake up and realise there is a patriotic new sheriff in town”.
One assumes he means the enfant terrible laying waste to every sense of decency that American people profess. This, remember, is the “leader” who refers to the mothers of the protesters as “bitches”.
This is nothing new, of course, coming as it does from a man who is in the habit of insulting anyone who crosses his path, and preferably whilst hiding behind a podium or his bodyguards.
