Democracy is a Pandora’s Box, but it’s the best system we have

Re: “Don’t believe Brexit fake news” and “A Thai resident’s endorsement for Brexit”, Have Your Say, October 14 and 29.

I have some sympathy with recent complaints made by letter-writers Noah Zarke and Simon Ordsall about expats endorsing Britain’s exit from the European Union. It does indeed seem irksome to bang on about abandoning your homeland, then waffle about a place you no longer live in. But that’s democracy for you – having the right to openly air your views, bizarre or otherwise.
That is the central issue here: the principle of democracy. Nigel Pike admits, like Adolf Hitler, to holding this political system in contempt except when it suits, for example freely voting in the Brexit referendum against a chimerical EU “dictatorship”, as he calls it – ignoring the fact that it democratically allows for referenda of this kind. In other words an exercise in suffrage that one will not find in Pyongyang or most of the Middle East.
Moreover, pontificating about “having considerably more legitimacy than those of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton” is irrelevant, self-aggrandising, and pointless with regard to the issue in question. One can only assume that anything those people say is “true” news.
I for one strongly support the exercise of democratic principles. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it is unquestionably the best system we have at our disposal.
