Govt has two core goals – neither involves chasing the Shinawatras

Re: “Nothing gained in hounding the Shinawatras”, Nation Editorial; November 1”.

I agree with your editorial that the government’s hounding of Thai political fugitives abroad will only damage the country’s international image.
The junta can insist on bringing Thaksin Shinawatra and his sister Yingluck back for trial in Thailand and punished if found guilty. However, foreign governments may regard this pursuit as an attempt at political intimidation.
There will be few countries willing to help the government in this task, which
is a distraction from the junta’s core mission.
The survival of a government depends on its handling of the economy, as well as democratic governance that represents all stakeholders in the country. It is by these means that a country develops and prospers.
Hence, the junta should concentrate only on achieving these two goals – and in a serious and unwavering manner.
