Phuket King’s Cup Regatta 2017 builds on success of ‘Best Asian Regatta’

Phuket King’s Cup Regatta 2017 builds on success of ‘Best Asian Regatta’

After its recent award, the King's Cup Regatta promises more action than ever

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta 31st Anniversary will be hosted at Beyond Resort Kata, Phuket, from 2-9 December, and will reaffirm the event’s success following its recent win for ‘2016 Asia Boating Awards – Best Asian Regatta’.

Kevin Whitcraft, President of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee, said: “Following the huge occasion of last year’s 30th Anniversary landmark race and event series, this year’s regatta already has over 75 keelboats confirmed to participate, so the regatta endures as a big attraction for sailing teams from around the world”.

Fleets this year feature the full-sized Keelboat & Multihull classes, scheduled on 4-6, 8 and 9 December, and International Dinghy racing, from 4-6 and 8 December. Event series include Optimist Boy & Girl, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, Laser Standard and Topper.

The regatta also encompasses International Dinghy fleet, a fast-growing racing programme designed to promote and encourage youth sailing in Thailand. Many of the young sailors competing will go on to join the crews of full-size keelboat racing teams, and compete in the larger Phuket King’s Cup Regatta in future regatta years.

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is organised by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.

The opening ceremony will be held on 3 December and the prize giving ceremony on 9 December, at Beyond Resort Kata, part of Kata Group, and rebranded from Kata Beach Resort and Spa, the longstanding spiritual home of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta.
