False gentility is a poor disguise for extremist hate

False gentility is a poor disguise for extremist hate

Re: “Haven of tranquillity or garden of hell”, Have Your Say, yesterday.

It is hard to see the letters page as a haven of tranquillity if it has letters that support hate groups and praise a political leader who is happy to spread that hatred.
Nation readers do not be tricked into thinking that such views are mild. In my youth I spoke to a number of people who had in fact lived under extremist governments and were lucky to survive, their stories too harrowing to tell. Indeed the camps were something like a garden of hell. Can you imagine having to eat potato peelings while others were not even given that at all and had to scavenge waste bins for food?
It is sad to see such extremist views return, and their holders having their letters published in this column.
