Rights the keynote to charity fun run

International Human Rights Day on December 10 drew officials and staff of the Delegation of the European Union to Thailand and the Justice Ministry’s Department of Rights and Liberties Protection to Lumpini Park for a charity run.

The “Run4Rights, Where Every Step Matters” event, aimed at building public awareness about rights, earned money for the Ramathibodi Foundation and Thailand Association of the Disabled.

“The European Union is founded on a strong engagement to promote and protect human rights, democracy and the rule of law,” said delegation charge d’affaires Luisa Ragher. “From the very beginning, we have made the protection of human rights not only the foundation of our common internal and external policies, but of our union itself.”

She pointed out that rights are relevant to everyone and reflect the minimum standards and means necessary for people to live with dignity.

“To mark this International Human Rights Day, we shall remember that we need to stand up for our own rights and those of others. We can take action in our own daily lives, to uphold the rights that protect us all.”

More than 1,000 runners took part in the five-kilometre fun run or 10.5km mini-marathon or just came to cheer for family and friends.

“It’s an excellent reminder of our commitment to ensure the basic freedom of all people and to protect their human rights,” said Pitikan Sithidej of the Ministry of Justice.

“Thailand was among the first 48 countries to endorse the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. To date, we have joined many international human-rights treaties that aim to promote, protect and focus on fundamental rights for all people.

“Aside from raising awareness on the importance of International Human Rights Day, this charity run also enhances generosity and enables fellow human beings to have fundamental rights without discrimination.”

Ragher and Pitikan distributed prizes to the runners as they crossed the finish line and turned over the donations to Suchart Owatwunasakul, deputy president of the Thailand Association of the Disabled, and Professor Dr Pornchai Simaroja of the Ramathibodi Foundation.
