Agency to expand successful foreign tourist volunteers programme

The Tourism Department plans to expand its showcasing of Thai hospitality through the highly successful foreign-volunteers programme, in a bid to boost tourist satisfaction and ensure a better rate of repeat visits to the Kingdom by foreign travellers.

Director-general Anan Wongbenjarat, whose agency is part of the Tourism and Sports Ministry, said on Monday that plans were afoot to further strengthen tourism volunteers’ foreign-language skills and service quality, as well as to increase the number of foreign volunteers to serve international visitors in the country’s more popular destinations.
At present, the department has 52 foreign tourist volunteers in the programme to provide visitors with information and assistance in 11 major tourism provinces: Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Songkhla, Satun, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat.
“We are in the process of acquiring more tourist volunteers for Krabi, Phang-nga and Nakhon Ratchasima, given the steady increases in the number of tourists there,” Anan explained.
