Bt998.95bn projects on track for EEC

Some 168 infrastructure projects worth Bt998.95 billion will be implemented to facilitate the development of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), according to the Ministry of Transport.

These projects will be undertaken in three phases. The Bt217.41-billion first phase covers 2017-18, and covers the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Centre (MRO Centre), U-Tapao International Airport, a high-speed train connecting three airports, the U-Tapao train station, along with the third phases of Laem Chabang Port and Map Ta Phut Port.
The Bt414.36-billion second phase, planned for 2019-21, will be continuation from the previous phase to enable a transport network to accommodate expected economic activities, including a double-track railway, air cargo, and the first phase of U-Tapao Airport and its free zone.
The Bt357.17-billion third phase to begin from 2022, will connect Thailand with neighbouring countries in an effort to push the EEC as a gateway for Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV). The third-phase projects include a train service connecting the EEC to Myanmar's Dawei and Cambodia.
Of the total 168 projects, 90 are for road networks worth Bt214.64 billion. There will be nine rail projects worth Bt398.59 billion, 19 marine network projects worth Bt160.61 billion, 20 air and logistics projects worth Bt173.84 billion, 12 electricity system development projects worth Bt40.46 billion, and 18 tap water system development projects worth Bt806.36 billion.
Of the Bt988.95 billion infrastructure investment planned, 59 per cent will come from public-private partnership schemes, 30 per cent from the national budget, 10 per cent from state enterprises' investment budget, and 1 per cent from a revolving fund of the Royal Thai Navy.
