Vegetarians opposed to needless killing, not killing for survival

Vegetarians opposed to needless killing, not killing for survival

Re: “Vegetarians have become missionaries for a racist creed”, Have Your Say, January 16.

In his anti-vegetarianism letter, A Johnsen draws attention to the Inuits and Sami who, he says, are totally dependent on animals and fish for food. He says, it is these “people of nature” who show what humans natural diet is, not our teeth.
Firstly, vegetarians and vegans are not opposed to others killing animals for their survival. They are simply opposed to the “needless” killing of animals.
These days there are very few people in the world who don’t have access to supermarkets and non-animal foods.
But, getting back to the “people of nature”. Currently the average life span of both Sami and Inuit men is 67 years – 10 years lower than for Canada overall. Does it really sound as though the diet of these people is man’s natural diet?
