Elton John deserves a long, happy retirement
So Elton John is finally hanging up his touring piano (The Nation, yesterday) and is going to “spend more time with his family” – an occasionally pejorative phrase reserved for disgraced MPs but, in John’s case, a well-deserved statement of impending retirement. I wish him and his folks well.
I’m not the world’s biggest fan of this fellow’s music – good as it is, it’s rather too “safe” for me – but he’s brought an awful lot of pleasure to an awful lot of people.
Give me the “dangerous” Jerry Lee Lewis, or even better Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister’s kicking rock ’n’ roll, any time. Shame that their retirement is rather more permanent than Elton’s is at the moment, but there you go.
