Hi-tech can bring sadness as well as happiness

Hi-tech can bring sadness as well as happiness

A few years ago, advances in technology enabled me to get back in touch with a close friend who lives in Bangkok after more than 40 years. Since then, we have met for a chat a few times every year.

A few months ago he was in Chiang Mai with his family. He said he would drop by to give my grandson sweets, but then would have to leave at once – no time to chat.
His bus arrived in my narrow, busy street and the driver stopped in a no-parking zone across from my house. As a result my grandson and I hurried to the middle of the street, received the gift and duly gave a “wai” to everyone both upon meeting and parting.
Only after we had walked back did I realise I had not uttered a word to them! Was it because I was too old to remember my good manners?
Since then, my friend has refused to communicate with me, despite my pleas for forgiveness via phone messages.
Thus, hi-tech progress can also bring sadness. But I am too old to worry too much about past happenings. Just let bygones be bygones.
