Another sign US has stepped down from global leadership

Re: “The UK Thinks Russia Is Behind the Spy Poisoning. President Trump Isn’t So Sure”, Time magazine, March 15.

US President Donald Trump took a wishy-washy stance when he failed to step up and stand beside close allies such as the UK, France and Germany in their condemnation of Russia for poisoning a Russian double-agent, his daughter and a policeman, along with dozens of passers-by in Britain.
To be fair, if there wasn’t enough evidence to show that Russia was responsible for the poisoning, Prime Minister Theresa May would not have made a statement of condemnation in the first place.
However, despite US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley and then-secretary of state Rex Tillerson delivering strong words of condemnation, President Trump simply commented: “As soon as we get the facts straight, if we agree with them, we will condemn Russia or whoever it may be.”
Trump’s lack of leadership in the global arena has cast doubt as to how the world can avoid major wars in the future. In the eyes of the world, the US is becoming more and more weak and irrelevant.
As then-first lady Michelle Obama once said: “The presidency doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are.”
