Trump is repeatedly defying White House aides on Russia

Re: “As US and Russia seek peace, UK finds itself on wrong side of history”, Have Your Say, March 23.

I respect Clara Holzer’s in-depth knowledge of international relations. However, in my last two letters, I simply inquired as to why US President Donald Trump would cast doubt on British PM Theresa May’s words over Russia’s alleged poisoning of British citizens in Britain. That doubt was expressed despite the two countries’ history of strong relations, as well as unequivocal support for the UK’s position from then-US secretary of state Rex Tillerson and Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley. We might also ask, why did Trump go out of his way to congratulate Russian President Vladimir Putin for having won Sunday’s election – an act that has sparked protests both from the left and the right of the American political spectrum.
In both of my letters, I did not intend to compete with or challenge Ms Holzer’s intelligence.
However, my criticism of President Trump still stands.
