Bangkokians try to make foreigners comfortable

Bangkokians try to make foreigners comfortable

Re: “The politically correct way to call Isaan voters stupid”, March 20, by Samsak Pola

I hope that the above writer was only making light of political correctness and does not actually believe that Isaan people are “incorrigibly cognitively impaired” or have “intellectual developmental disorder”. For no matter how you phrase it, calling a group of people stupid is a no-no. Now, calling Isaan people stubborn is something that I could accept.
It has been my experience that Isaan individuals become more inward whenever anyone criticises them; they seem to take an “us” vs “them” attitude, saying the “heck” with everyone else, when challenged. They seem to expect expats to adapt to their ways. Bangkok people, on the other hand, seem to accept criticism better, wanting to show the good side of Thailand to foreigners. They try to make foreigners in their midst comfortable, attempting to adapt to their tastes. The reason why this is so is probably because many Bangkokians are better educated in both qualitative and quantitative terms, and have travelled abroad more than their Isaan counterparts.
