EU and US were sceptical too – until they sniffed the evidence

Re: “Poisonous insults not a formula to solve spy poisoning puzzle”, Have Your Say, yesterday.

Clara Holzer takes exception to robust challenges, but I take exception to implications that my country’s government might have released a toxic nerve agent on the streets of a British city, thereby endangering its own citizens. This was one of at least 30 different theories as to who might have been behind the Salisbury attack which have emanated from Russian government and other sources, clearly part of Russia’s strategy of seeking to sow confusion and division among the Western democracies.
Well, it’s a strategy that seems to have spectacularly failed, with 137 Russian “diplomats” now expelled from 23 countries and the UN, thereby dismantling much of Russia’s international spy network. The Russian Consulate in Seattle is also being closed. The initially less than enthusiastic EU response to Britain’s accusations of Russian involvement in the Salisbury attack was converted to strong support during last week’s EU summit meeting in Brussels, when British Prime Minister May revealed what appeared to be compelling information from British Intelligence sources of Russian culpability. The EU is recalling its ambassador to Moscow, and 16 EU countries are among those expelling Russian spies.
Come on, Clara, if you want your opinions to be given serious consideration, then ditch the conspiracy theories.
