Brits prepared their colonies to think for themselves
Re: The debate on British colonialism
The Germans, the Dutch, the Spanish, the Italians, the Portuguese, the French and even the Vikings all had colonies.
And after achieving freedom from their colonial rulers, many of these eventually fell to Communism. However, Britain at its peak had around 102 colonies and not one of them fell to communism. Fundamentally that is why we are free today. The Brits were strategic in that they bequeathed roads for products to get to market, a judiciary to settle arguments and – most of all – a worldwide common language. The US may have held the “Workers Paradise” militarily “in check” in recent times, but only the Brits prepared their colonies to think for themselves and the future.
