Get used to paraquat – it’s here to stay

Re: “Review of paraquat green light demanded”, News, June 4.

I think Big Pharma had something to do with this. But farmers love paraquat – they would hate not to use it. It’s the consumers who dislike the poisons.

Farmers really want to keep using the stuff. It would probably cause them more work if they could not. The producers want to keep selling it to Thailand. It’s only the consumers that want it banned.
I am one of those consumers.
What I also would love to see – yes, I am living in a fantasy world – is regular testing of the vegetables in fresh markets and shops to see if they don’t have too many pesticides on them.
I eat a lot of vegetables and even though they are cleaned well, I still have to worry about it.
Usually eating vegetables is healthy, but that might not be the case in Thailand.
I would not mind paying extra to know things are tested, but we know how things work. I can moan all I want, but I chose to live here. It just feels good writing it down.

I am lucky enough to live in Chiang Rai where we have so many organic farmers.

Am I the only one who’s sceptical when I see something labelled “organic”, with a price that’s several multiples [the usual price]?
