Which life has more value?

Which life has more value?

I confess that when I heard that a Delhi court had upheld a decision to hang the three Indian men who raped, tortured and murdered a woman, I applauded.

My reason for opposing the death penalty is my concern about the possibility of an innocent person being executed. But when one of those three men gloated about what he did, and said the woman got what she deserved, I concluded that the man has no right to live.
Why is it that the same people who ridicule me for caring about innocent animals in a slaughterhouse care more about a man who is proud that he raped and murdered a woman? Why should the species of an individual be the only criteria we use for judging the value of his life?
