Re: “Let’s hear it for the PONTSOs”, Have Your Say, July 17.

Such a letter would never be printed in a Western country. Ye Olde Pedant does not use proper English throughout, using too much slang. Instead of saying that two people engage in sexual intercourse, the letter-writer uses the language of the street to describe this act. While it may be tolerable to use such language in an informal conversation, it certainly is not in a written piece.
It confirms my suspicions that sometimes the Thai editors themselves are not familiar with the various forms of slang used in the English language, not knowing which ones are acceptable or not. This is understandable, I suppose, considering that Thailand is not an English-speaking country. Nonetheless, if one is not sure, then better not to print something that is given in writing.
Shame on this paper for printing the above letter, and even more shame on Ye Olde Pedant, who should know better than to use the language of the street in official communication.
