UK can safely ignore Thai grumbling

Re: “Money always opens the doors”, Have Your Say, August 9.

The claims that the British government faces difficulty in explaining the visa granted to Yingluck Shinawatra are nonsense. It is under no obligation to offer any such explanation and in any case I don’t think there is much interest around the world in getting one, except for some factions here in Thailand.
As to whether Ms Yingluck absconded with taxpayers’ money, well, maybe she did and maybe she didn’t. Obviously I have no idea and nor, I strongly suspect, do any of those who make such accusations. Do they have any compelling evidence to back up their claims? If so, have they handed it to the relevant authorities? Presumably not, since it’s worth remembering that the original intention to charge Ms Yingluck with corruption was dropped in favour of the more imprecise and subjective charge of dereliction of duty.
As to the accusation that Britain actively welcomes dodgy oligarchs, well, that’s a bit rich coming from someone in Thailand, a country with a magnetic appeal to hordes of shady characters of all descriptions.
