Do not cherry-pick the Koran

Do not cherry-pick the Koran

Re: “A closer look at the Koran reveals glint of razor-sharp steel”, Have Your Say, yesterday.

Indeed it does, more than 100 such glints. But one only has to read the rest of the verse 2:256, quoted by Ian Martin (September 11), to understand the message: “There shall be no compulsion in acceptance of the religion. The right has become clear from the wrong.” In other words the truth of Islam is so self-evident that no one needs to be coerced. There is space for only one God and one Truth in Islam.
Now let’s read the very next verse, 2:257. “The Devil is the guardian of those who deny the Truth and he leads them from light to darkness. These are the dwellers of hell wherein they will live forever.” I don’t wish to split hairs, but that sounds like compulsion to
me.
Beware of the cherry-pickers – Koranic quotes should be made in context.
