Decision to scrap pachyderm polo is a sad day for elephant welfare

Re: “On World Animal Day, it’s time to end elephant polo”, Opinion & Analysis, October 4.

For several years during the early days of elephant polo in Thailand I sponsored two elephant polo teams that were involved or played in the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament. One team was named Screwy Tuskers and the other team was called Screwless Tuskers. Incidentally, the latter was Thailand’s first all-ladyboy elephant polo team.
During these tournaments I never saw any elephant abuse. Moreover, I was aware that most of the money generated by these games was donated to charities that supported elephant welfare. The organising donor was William Heinecke of Minor International.
