It would appear that that the 2018 silly season is so enamoured by fellow letter-writers, that they seek to continue it.
Let’s take a closer look: we are informed that the US economy “did not improve because of Obama, but despite Obama”. Rubbish. According to Brooks Jackson and the Annenberg Public Policy Centre’s fact-checking project, over Obama’s eight years in office the US economy gained almost 12 million jobs, or 8.7 per cent. By the time Obama left office, the jobless rate had dropped by three full percentage points. Facts, not naked dissembling or statistical legerdemain.
The backdrop to these figures is another fact: as Jackson explains, Obama inherited the unique disadvantage of finding his administration in the midst of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.
