Shift your viewpoint to see history’s greatest theft

Shift your viewpoint to see history’s greatest theft

Re: “A case of woolly-minded animal rights activists”, Have Your Say, November 29.

Robin Grant, sheep most definitely have their fleece “stolen”. If someone took away all your warm clothing and you were forced to live outside in your undies at the start of a bitterly cold and wet winter, I’m sure you’d say your clothes were “stolen” too.
Of course, we steal far more than this from animals. We steal their milk, eggs, feathers, down, fur, honey and silk. In addition to this – and solely for the benefit of producers – we rob farmed animals of their horns (cattle) tails (pigs, dairy cows, sheep) beaks (chickens) testicles (calves, piglets) ovaries (cows) toes, snood, (turkeys) teeth (piglets) skin (sheep/mulesing). In factory farms we rob them of fresh air, sunshine, comfort, space to exercise, health, (broilers) happiness and all vision of their beautiful world.
Farmed females are robbed of their right to nurture their young and all farmed animals are robbed of freedom and a natural way of living.
The final, and greatest theft of all, of course, is the theft of their precious lives. How ironic that we say stealing is a crime!
