The disturbing reality behind ‘cruelty-free meat’

The disturbing reality behind ‘cruelty-free meat’

Re: “Would vegetarians eat cruelty-free meat?” Have Your Say, January 7.

Robin Grant says, “The UK has one of the highest standards of animal welfare in the world.”
Well, if that’s the case, it doesn’t say much for animal welfare in other countries.
Britain’s Animal Aid filmed inside 14 UK slaughterhouses and found evidence of lawbreaking in 13 of them. The problems were serious and widespread. Footage revealed animals being kicked, slapped and stomped on. Some had their throats slit while fully conscious. Some were beaten and burned with cigarettes.
Even where no laws were broken, animals clearly suffered pain and fear. “High welfare” plants, such as those accredited by Freedom Food, were no better and were guilty of breaches of the welfare laws.
Grant says, even if cruelty was removed from all livestock farming, animal rights “hardliners” would not accept the slaughter of animals for food. You’re right, Robin, and this is because they have come to recognise that killing other life-loving sentient beings simply because we enjoy the taste of their flesh is unjust. Would you think it was fair if someone wanted to kill you simply because they fancied the taste of you?
