Reminder to Chinese embassy: Kingdom of Thailand is not a province of the PRC

Re: “China objects to letter from Taiwan’s ‘Foreign Ministry’,” Letters, January 26-27.

Somebody needs to inform the Chinese embassy that civilised countries uphold a principle much higher than the “one-China” policy that the embassy so furiously promotes. That is the concept of freedom of the press. In civilised countries, people are free to write anything they like, short of libel, and newspapers are free to publish it. I know that the authoritarian minions of the Chinese embassy will find this truth unpleasant, but it is true nonetheless. Anybody who doesn’t like what has been published is equally free to challenge it, as the embassy in this case has done.
May I remind Chinese embassy personnel that Thailand is an independent Kingdom. It is not a province of the PRC, and therefore is not subject to Chinese dictates.
I am glad that the embassy “requested” The Nation to heed its list of four demands (to “pay high attention to the aforementioned issue”, to “act in strict accordance with the One China principle”, to “take effective measures to eliminate the harmful impact”, and to “prevent similar incident [sic] from happening again”). It has a perfect right to request changes in The Nation’s policies. It doesn’t have the right to dictate them.
