Humans are natural-born killers – deal with it

Humans are natural-born killers – deal with it

Re: “What gives humans the right to mercilessly kill, exploit fellow animals?”, Have Your Say, February 1.

Jenny Moxham, with whom I sympathise, puts forth an argument for veganism which is not compelling. Rather it is based upon a naive idealism which dictates that killing animals for food “should be deemed ethically wrong”, and we recognise that “killing our fellow humans is wrong”.
These arguments have no realistic foundation. We are the single biggest murderers of our own species. In truth killing our fellow humans is wrong – except for war, punishment, revenge, honour, self-preservation, money, jealousy or even hunger. If this were not true there would be no military and no armed police.
Yes we are not supposed to endorse these things, but like death itself, it is something we hide from our mind’s eye so we can feel like Moxham hopes to feel all the time: not in mortal fear and free of guilt.
Alas, life is an inherently sacrificial process and our world will not become a John Lennon-like paradise anytime soon. People must discover the truth for themselves rather than be told what to believe. That is the only way to be free of fear and guilt.
