Even world’s biggest meat producers are going veggie

Even world’s biggest meat producers are going veggie

Re: “Darwin relished investigating other species – with his fork” and “What vegans and Bangkok tailor shops have in common”, Have Your Say, yesterday.

The letters from Robin Grant and Simon Ordsall yesterday clearly demonstrate their lack of understanding of our looming current world climate catastrophe. I suggest they go out and buy themselves a copy of the book “Storms of My Grandchildren”, by the world’s pre-eminent climate scientist, James Hansen.
The world’s largest animal-product producers – Tyson Foods, Cargill and Memphis Meats – are developing huge plant-based branches of their businesses, and billionaires Richard Branson and Bill Gates are investing millions of dollars, as they see the writing on the wall. Animal food production is no longer a sustainable way to feed our burgeoning human world population. It uses countless trillions of fish, billions of land animals and birds, and arable land to grow the crops to feed them. Innovative investment is going into the vertical, hydroponically grown food and drought-proof crops. It is no longer about our food choices, gentlemen, but about what is sustainable for the future of our grandchildren. It is time for all of us to heed these dire warnings and stop the stupid rhetoric.
