Context needed in judging Koran’s attitude to unbelievers

Re: “Koran is the greatest barrier between Islam and democracy”, Have Your Say, March 4.

Egon claim that the Koran dictates that all “unbelievers” should be killed is taken out of context. The Koran is referring to people who attack or even kill Muslims. It did not mean that Muslims should kill all non-Muslims.
Besides, there are horrific injunctions in the Christian Bible – including the one saying that a man should kill his bride if he finds out on his wedding night she is not a virgin. But it’s unfair to hold every Christian or Muslim responsible for every comment in the Bible or the Koran.
I’ve been involved in such secular causes as animal rights and Palestinian rights. And I resent it when the comments or actions of the most extremist people involved in either cause are used to discredit everyone associated with those movements. And I assume Christians and Muslims resent it when the same sort of thing is done to them.
