Why little Kit the pancake maker deserves to be a national hero

Why little Kit the pancake maker deserves to be a national hero

Re: “Pak Kret pancake maker, 14, becomes online celebrity”, Around Thailand, February 28.

First of all, I praise Nong (brother) Kit, a 14-year-old boy who for many years has helped his parents make and sell deep-fried dough from 5am before school and Thai-style crepes (khanom Tokyo) after school until 11pm, always with a smile and determination.
Kit decided to help his parents after seeing how the long hours of work to support the family were making his parents tired and ill. The father works another job during the day and the family lives from paycheque to paycheque.
The good news is that Nong Kit’s story has caught the attention of online media. The resulting national fame has helped boost sales of his “Kit-Tokyo” pancakes. It makes him feel glad and proud to help relieve his parent’s monthly burden of rent, school fees and other living expenses.
The story is heart-warming but also a great example for kids everywhere. We as a society should support children like Kit as role models for younger generations. Kids who help with household chores, or with other work, relieve what can be immense pressures on poor working parents. (Of course, none of this should come at the expense of schoolwork, which is vital to children’s future.)
Kit probably doesn’t know that his goodness is also helping his parents (hopefully) achieve their dream of buying a home for the whole family. Until then, he wakes up every day full of determination to achieve his simple goal – easing the heavy burden his parents must carry.
