Evidence suggest dog attacks are rarer than we think

Re: “Stray-dog problem is rooted in human behaviour”, Have Your Say, March 5.

Eric Bahrt writes that my assumption that few people in Thailand are bitten by dogs is wrong since he has been bitten two times. Contrary to his experience I can state that hundreds of people I know in Thailand have never been bitten during my 35 years here. But since neither of these experiences can be considered representative random samples, no conclusions whatsoever can be drawn! However, the assertion that very few people are bitten is supported by the rarity of news reports on dog attacks.
I love pit bulls, which are in fact among the kindest breeds of dog (ample evidence of this is available on YouTube). It is almost always the dogs’ owners who are responsible for their aggressiveness.
