Success at the cost of freedom is not success

Success at the cost of freedom is not success

Re: “Putin has outmanoeuvred the West – Russia’s success proves it”, Have Your Say, March 8.

Wikipedia has the following to say about Russia under Vladimir Putin: “According to international human rights organisations and independent domestic media outlets, the following were among the common violations of human rights in Russia: deaths in custody, and the widespread and systematic torture of persons in custody by police, security forces and prison guards; hazing or dedovshchina in the Russian Army; neglect and cruelty in Russian orphanages; and violations of children’s rights.”
According to Amnesty International, there were discrimination, racism and murders of members of ethnic minorities. Since 1992 at least 50 journalists have been killed, some in armed conflicts but others the targets of contract killings.
It is no wonder Yingwai Suchaovanich extols Putin’s Russia. It reminds him of the glorious achievements of Emperor Xi in his phantom paradise of human freedom: Not the People’s Republic of China.
