Thailand-China launch Mekong skills project

Thailand and China on Monday launch a project on capacity building for the national coordinator of the Mekong Lancang Cooperation (MLC) to boost their skills for cooperation.

It marks the third anniversary of cooperation among six countries in the Mekong basin.
Two memorandums of understanding will be signed at a ceremony today at the Foreign Ministry.
Thai Deputy Foreign Minister Virasakdi Futrakul will preside over the event, which will include an exhibition to celebrate the MLC while China’s Ambassador to Thailand, Lyu Jian, will represent his country to sign the MoU on cooperation with Thai Foreign Ministry permanent secretary Busaya Mathelin.
The two countries will celebrate the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Week from today.
Established in 2016, the MLC comprises the six Mekong riparian states: China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
Three years on, by fully leveraging the six countries’ advantages in geographical proximity, cultural affinity and economic complementarity, and promoting all-round cooperation, the MLC has set up a framework for multi-level and multi-field cooperation, ambassador Lyu said in his congratulatory message.
The MLC conducted nearly 30 infrastructure and industrial projects, put in place around 100 small and medium cooperation programmes, and made important contributions to economic and social development along the river, he said.
The “Brightness Action” programme, the Lancang-Mekong Youth Leaders Cultural Experience Camp, open-air cinema and all the other livelihood programmes have brought tangible benefits to the public, and strengthened the mutual understanding and trust among the people, he added.
The MLC stays as an open, inclusive and mutually beneficial mechanism, and collaborates with other mechanisms to complement and reinforce each other, he said.
