Real enemy of Thai democracy is not the junta party
Will this election deliver democracy to Thailand? Here is the ultimate litmus test.
If Thaksin Shinawatra, who is currently fleeing a long list of serious legal cases, ever sets foot on Thai soil again we will know for sure Thailand’s experiment with democracy has failed and he will never have to face the music.
But if the billionaire remains in his preferred safe haven for economic and criminal crooks, free from the threat of extradition, there is a slim chance that democracy will evolve in Thailand. But his ill-gotten billions will poke Thailand for years to come anyhow, regardless of this election’s final outcome.
