Does Thanathorn’s popularity scare the junta?
Following the charge of sedition laid against Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Ruangruangkit, it is now reported that the police are seeking to interview his elderly mother, who apparently owned the car in which Thanathorn allegedly drove some students away from a small, peaceful demonstration against the junta.
It is clear this new party’s popularity has rattled the junta.
Sedition is usually defined as an illegal attempt to resist or rebel against those in power. On that basis, Thanathorn’s alleged actions pale into insignificance when compared to the tactics of various political groups in Thailand in recent years, including the junta, which can certainly be defined as sedition.
The actions of those in authority are becoming ever more surreal and will further tarnish Thailand’s reputation.
