Beware self-proclaimed Buddhist preachers

Re: “Sermon on Buddhism mistakes the nature of religion”, Have Your Say, April 8.

Paul is correct that JC Wilcox states opinions as facts. That shortcoming is also true of that other Trump apologist and “practising Buddhist”, Michael Setter. Let’s examine their “facts”.
A few years ago Wilcox wrote that the 14 student protesters whom the junta tossed into jail were on Thaksin’s payroll. Wilcox refused my challenge that he provide evidence to back up his slanderous lie.
Another Wilcox “fact” is that all Palestinian protesters are “run by terrorists”. As someone who has marched side by side with Palestinians, I know for a fact that Wilcox is a crackpot.
But my favourite Wilcox “fact” is that the opponents of Donald Trump are all part of an international conspiracy to impose a “New World Order” and to end the sovereignty of the United States.
Meanwhile, Michael Setter tells us that “the latest science proves” that plants are as aware as animals and that high cholesterol is good for us. Neither of these clowns backs up what they write. But they hope that by hiding behind phrases such as “the latest science”, “practising Buddhists” or “New World Order” that we will think they have some unique knowledge that the rest of us are too stupid to comprehend. And if we believe that then we are as stupid as those two think we are.
