Don’t start celebrating victory over ‘interfering’ embassies just yet

Re: “Conscientious or not, Thais are Thais”, Letters, The Nation Weekend, April 20-12.

Vint Chavala claims that he and a group of fellow Thais succeeded in stopping foreign embassies from “interfering in Thailand’s affairs”. The proof? When Future Forward Party (FFP) secretary-general Piyabutr Saengkanokkul reported to police last Wednesday to face two charges, the embassies sent no staff.
Self-praise is no praise, as the saying goes. Contrary to Vint’s impressive claim, I suggest the reality is that since Piyabutr is not the “face” of the FFP, foreign diplomats knew his case would not generate much publicity compared to that of FFP leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit. So they didn’t bother to come out in the sweltering heat for a photo op.
