UK govt appears to be breaking its own laws

Re: “Brexit supporters cynically equate democracy with a single referendum”, Have Your Say, April 25

Lawrence Tilney is absolutely correct. A referendum is basic, direct democracy, where people have the right to control the affairs of their country. Remember, “of the people, by the people, for the people”. The parliament is representative democracy, where the people appoint MPs to represent them. With a population of many millions, direct democracy is obviously not practical, which is why there is representative democracy.
In June 2016, the people voted in a referendum on being part of the European Union, with the UK government promising that the result of this referendum would be implemented. There were two choices: remain or leave. The people voted by a majority of 1.4 million to leave, and parliament, as promised, implemented Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, and 498 MPs voted it into law stating the UK would leave the European Union at 11.30pm on March 29. Then parliament broke its own law by not leaving at that time on that date. They did not just violate the law and destroy the principles of democracy, but also broke their promise in their 2017 party manifestos to honour the wish of the people.
The British people are not gullible.
They understand the difference between “leave” and “remain” regardless of the propaganda. Above all, “leave” was written into law by the lawmakers themselves. This law has not been repealed and the Theresa May government is being taken to court for ignoring the law by remaining in the European Union.
