Thai mixed doubles to face world No 2

Red-hot Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai remained the last Thai hope in the Badminton Asia Championships in Wuhan following a three-game-win over an Indonesian pair on Friday.

The world No 4 took on Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja of Indonesia in the mixed doubles quarter-final and were extended into three games before prevailing 15-21 21-7 21-12 in 52 minutes.

However, the Thai women’s doubles team of Jongkolphan Kittitharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai were forced to retire during the match against Japanese top seeds Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota at 2-3 in the first game. Jongkolphan sustained a knee injury and had to give up to avoid aggravating the injury.

For Dechapol and Sapsiree, they will face world No 2 Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping in the semi-final on Saturday. The Chinese pair lead their head-to-head series 4-2.
